Going on holiday with your dog to Southern Europe? Here’s what you need to know about health, heat, and coat care


It’s that time again: the suitcases are almost ready, the route is being planned, and this year the dog is coming along. More and more people choose to take their dog to Southern Europe or Germany—and that makes sense. Exploring together, hiking through the mountains, or cooling off by a lake. But a trip abroad requires a bit of extra preparation, especially when it comes to your dog’s health and well-being.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the main risks you may encounter on the road—from parasites to heat problems—and how to best prepare your dog for them, stress-free and with joy.

## Parasites abroad: more than just ticks

In the Netherlands, we’re used to being alert for ticks, especially in spring and summer. But in Southern Europe and parts of Germany, you may encounter parasites that we don’t see much of here. It’s good to know what risks are out there, because many of these diseases start with vague symptoms and are only recognized later on.

### Leishmania

Possibly the most well-known vacation disease in dogs. It’s transmitted by sandflies. These are a small type of mosquito active during the summer and spring months in the warmer parts of Europe, especially in countries like Spain, Italy, France, and Greece. The infection can linger for years and eventually affects the immune system and organs. Full recovery is often not possible; treatment focuses on controlling symptoms. The key is prevention. You can do this in several ways. Since sandflies are active at sunrise and sunset, keeping your dog indoors during these times helps a lot. In addition, there are insect-repellent products that protect your dog from sandflies. One example is Vectra 3D.

### Ehrlichia and Babesia

Both diseases are transmitted by ticks and are mainly found in warmer areas such as Southern France, Greece, and Italy. They can cause anemia, fever, and lethargy. If not properly treated, these parasites can lead to serious complications. Therefore, make sure to check your dog thoroughly for ticks and use an effective tick repellent.

### Heartworm (Dirofilaria Immitis)

This worm is transmitted by mosquitoes and settles in the heart and pulmonary vessels. Dogs usually don’t show signs of illness until months after the bite, which means the link to the trip is often not immediately made. Heartworm is mostly found in warm, humid areas around the Mediterranean. Preventing infection is crucial with this parasite. If the worms are allowed to mature, they become much harder to treat. Adult worms can get stuck in major blood vessels after treatment, which can cause serious issues. Prevent infection by starting appropriate deworming treatment before your trip and repeating it monthly until you return to the Netherlands.

For many of these diseases, prevention is key. Always visit your vet before you travel. They can advise you on the right preventive products such as spot-on treatments, tick collars, or tablets. In some cases, preventive injections are also available.

## Coat care: keeping your dog cool and comfortable on holiday

While parasite prevention is something for the vet, you as the owner can do a lot yourself to keep your dog comfortable and healthy. One thing people often overlook is the coat. Especially with dogs that have thick, long, or dense fur, good grooming can make a big difference during warm holidays.

This doesn’t necessarily mean shaving your dog short—that’s actually discouraged for many breeds—but it is important to keep the coat clean, tangle-free, and breathable. A matted coat insulates more, retains heat, and can stay wet after swimming, which may lead to skin issues.

A well-maintained coat:
allows air to circulate so your dog can cool off better,
prevents hot spots or irritation from moisture and sand,
makes it easier to spot ticks and other critters,
helps keep swimming pleasant and hygienic (a thick, wet coat dries poorly).

Whether or not your dog needs a visit to the groomer before departure depends on the coat type, its condition, and your own grooming experience. Some dogs only need a simple wash and brush, while others benefit from a professional session to thin out the coat or help remove tangles.

## Prepared for the road

Going on holiday with your dog is often one of the most enjoyable experiences you can have together. And with a bit of preparation, you can prevent discomfort and unpleasant surprises. Ask your vet about appropriate parasite protection, and take a critical look at your dog’s coat and grooming needs: is a wash, brush, or trim necessary before departure?
