Nail care for dogs: why overgrown nails can be a problem


You might hear it when your dog walks across a hard floor: a click-click-click sound with every step. Many dog owners recognize this sound but don’t always realize it’s a sign their dog’s nails are too long. Overgrown nails are not only uncomfortable for your dog but can also lead to several issues.

## Why are long nails a problem?

When your dog’s nails become too long, it affects the way they walk. The nails constantly touch the ground, changing the positioning of the paws and placing extra strain on the joints. Over time, this can lead to poor posture and discomfort during movement.

Although long nails don’t directly cause arthritis, they can contribute to joint stress. Your dog may shift their paw placement to relieve pressure on their nails, which puts additional strain on joints and tendons. This is especially concerning for older dogs or breeds prone to joint problems, such as Labradors and German Shepherds, as it can worsen symptoms over time.

Additionally, long nails can split or even break off completely. Not only is this painful, but it can also lead to infections. Some dogs with severely overgrown nails may even experience ingrown nails that grow into the paw pad — a very painful condition that can cause inflammation. Avoid an unnecessary trip to the vet by keeping your dog’s nails well-maintained.

## How often should you trim your dog’s nails?

The frequency depends on a few factors. Dog nails naturally wear down when walking on hard surfaces, like asphalt. The more your dog walks on such surfaces, the less often you’ll need to trim. Dogs that mainly walk on soft surfaces like grass or carpet will need nail trims more frequently. A general guideline is to check the nails every three to four weeks and trim them if needed.

You can trim your dog’s nails yourself, but it can be nerve-wracking — especially with black nails where it’s hard to see the ‘quick’ (the sensitive inner part). If you're unsure, it’s always better to consult a professional.
